According to Mundo Deportivo, Serie A club Lazio are negotiating to sign Mariano Diaz on a free transfer in less than 30 days when the transfer window heats up the winter.
For Mariano to join Lazio for free, Real Madrid would have to terminate his contract as he’s still tied to Los Blancos until the end of the season.
The Spanish striker has only played 16 games across the last two seasons for Real Madrid and has started just three times and scoring one goal.
Madrid would be better off offloading a benchwarmer and freeing themselves of his wages, but it remains to be seen if Mariano would agree to leave.
Staying with Real Madrid until the end of the season may be more enticing for the 29-year-old than regular game time elsewhere. He would stand a chance of winning the Champions League and La Liga before eventually leaving for free and earning a big sign-on bonus.
